MS Access is a great tool to combine this data into one database with forms and reports that make it easy for users to work with the data. Many small and medium sized business keep tons of data in spreadsheets or other independent files. When used for project work, where a complete database application is created, MS Access can provide a real sense of accomplishment when students see the entire system running together. These features support most of the topics covered in the introduction to databases course.
This supports the second main goal of the course: To teach Structured Query Language (SQL). In addition, it is also possible to write SQL statements and run them against the MS Access database. These tools make it a relatively simple task for students to develop complete database applications. In short, MS Access supports all three parts of a database system: User Interface, Business Logic, and DBMS. The only software tools that come with these are used to manage the DBMS.īy contrast, Microsoft Access (and other desktop DBMS such as Filemaker Pro) have at their core a relational DBMS, however they also add tools used to build data entry forms, reports, navigation forms and feature a robust programming language (VBA in the case of MS Access). All of the database management system software named above (MySQL, Oracle etc.) focus on doing one task very well – efficiently storing and retrieving data. Next, it is important to understand what Microsoft Access is and how it compares to other database management systems.
